Soft Reeds
I have gone for a very soft looking photograph today, I dunno why, I suppose its the weekend and I feel great.
I am also pleased to announce that I have decided to take my copyrighting a bit more seriously now on mcawilliams.com, and as of tonight all images, past and future, will be watermarked. I have taken this step due to the fact that I have always said if someone wants an image, once its not for commercial use ie. a personal blog etc, you are more then welcome to it once you let me know and also dont do the silly thing of hotlinking to my images.
Well this has fallen on many a deaf ear and so things have to change, watermarking is step number one, behind the scenes myself and my hosts are going to work on the images that have been hotlinked already.

I like the mistiness of the leaves, lovely effect. And the watermark is subtle enough that it doesn’t detract from the photo. How do you know if your images have been hotlinked? I use Flickr for mine so I don’t have the same problem but I guess it makes it harder for me to see if anyone is using my images without my permission.

Explain the hotlinking thing? I use images off google, but I don’t know if I should or not. Am I costing people money? Is there an alternative other than just not using pics?
Claire says:
Hey Jo, hotlinking is when you link to an image on someone else’s site in order to show it on yours rather than downloading it and hosting it yourself. It costs people money in that you are using their bandwidth to host the image that you put on your site. It’s kind of like going over to your neighbour’s house, plugging an extension cable into one of their sockets and using it to run your hair dryer.
Obviously if the images you are putting up are from Flickr or Photobucket this doesn’t really apply but if the owners haven’t given permission for people to use their images than it’s still considered stealing. The best thing to do is use jazzbiscuit’s image search: http://www.jazzbiscuit.com/blogCCsearch/ instead of google, because it will give you images that are free to use as long as you credit the owner.
