It costs people money in that you are using their bandwidth to host the image that you put on your site. It's kind of like going over to your neighbour's house, plugging an extension cable into one of their sockets and using it to run your hair dryer. Obviously if the images you are putting up are from Flickr or Photobucket this doesn't really apply but if the owners haven't given permission for people to use their images than it's still considered stealing. The best thing to do is use jazzbiscuit's image search: http://www.jazzbiscuit.com/blogCCsearch/ instead of google, because it will give you images that are free to use as long as you credit the owner. And the watermark is subtle enough that it doesn't detract from the photo. How do you know if your images have been hotlinked? I use Flickr for mine so I don't have the same problem but I guess it makes it harder for me to see if anyone is using my images without my permission.
