Volcanic Flames

I decided tonight to do some backing up on the gigs of photos I have on the computer and found this hidden away in my holiday from last year snaps.

This was taken in Lanzarote while on a trip through the volcanic region there and shows an experiment of the heat generated under Timanfaya. Basically the guide got some dry vegetation and held it above a hole which a long way down has lava in it.

The heat generates enough heat to burn the dried plant our in a matter of seconds. Its quite incredible the power of nature.

I hate doing this but I have been so busy with my real job and christmas parties that I aint been out shooting at all lately, hence another shot from the archives.

This was taken during the year while on holidays in Lanzarote from my apartment balcony. I really like the green wood that came out from the wall.

Timanfaya

A must see when in Lanzarote is the Timanfaya National Park. This park covers a surface area of 51 square kilometres, and includes within it’s boundaries an extensive range of volcanoes. Because of the lack of rain, there is very little erosion on the island and the volcanic scenery must look much as it did after the eruptions. This image is basically composed of lava ash the next images I will put up show much more Lava rock, but because you would expect that I felt I should start with the unusual. I will admit also that these images were taken from a moving bus so excuses for any focus problems.

Jameos Del Agua Lagoon

Here is my second shot from “Jameos Del Agua” straight ahead past the plants at the back would be where the previous shot came from this is the Lagoon in the centre of the grotto. The design and layout obviously has been designed by nature but Cesar Manrique an artist from Lanzarote has also helped to make it a fantastic tourist attraction.

The lagoon contains salt water but is amazingly clear and is home to hundreds of tiny blind white crabs normally found in deeper seas. The other amazing thing is that this lagoon even though far away from the ocean rises and falls with the tide.

I hope my blog is not starting to sound like a lecture but this really was one of my highlights from my trip to Lanzarote

Want some holiday snaps?

Well I have just come back from my 2 weeks holidays in Lanzarote. It was very quiet which, with Paulas pregnancy was probably a good thing. I did not take my camera out that much but did take it on a full day excursion around the Island, and even though I know people generally dont like looking at other peoples shots from abroad some of the pictures I managed to take have come out great from that day trip.

This first shot is from “Jameos del Agua”. A Jameo refers to a cavity produced when a volcanic cave collapses. This part of the cave runs on for another few miles to the atlantic ocean. it is quite amazing to thick that lava flows while been so destructive can also form something quite beautiful.

I have also entered this in for Photofridays challenge “masterpiece” since Cesar Manrique is an artist and helped with the design. So in my eyes anyhow this truly is a masterpiece from nature.

More to follow.
