Peruvian Lily

Updated due to my stupidity in naming the flower incorrectly, thanks Debbie

Myself and Paula (well more Paula) fell in love with this flower many years ago, possibly 6 years ago. Its a Peruvian lily. The great thing about this plant is that it has continued to grow like crazy every year, more flowers appear on a regular basis and this year with our mild winter it even flowered in January, WTF.

Anyhow the flower itself is stunning, I think you will agree.

On another note this bank holiday weekend a photomeet has been planned, to take in the Maritime festival that is running in Dublin this weekend. We plan on meeting at the Harbourmaster at 1pm and will stop taking pictures at 4pm. If you are out and about come meet us there, there is a facebook page also if you want to let us know you are coming.

  1. Debbie Said,

Beautiful photo, of a flower I love too. Sorry to be pedantic (I’m also a plant name geek) but it’s actually a Peruvian lily (Alstroemeria). Tiger lily is something else - usually Lilium though one or two other species occasionally get called that.

Sorry i can’t make the photomeet on Sunday, I’d really like to be there and meet you all. Next time!

  2. McAWilliams Said,

Debbie, fair play to ya, that was what it was sold to me as but I had my doubts when I did a google image search for it, I shall have to rename the image and correct my post many thanks for the info.

There will be other meets, and sure with you on twitter you wont miss out, thats where they seem to start off from.

  3. Will Knott Said,

If it is a lilly from Peru (the names can be wrong, or even semi-random), then the cold weather would suit it.
no idea about Sunday at the moment. Probably won’t know until Sunday morning

  4. Debbie Said,

OK, sorry about this. ;) Plant names are not random, although I agree that *some* common names are not consistent enough but that’s usually a geographical issue. However, just to be clear, here & in the USA Alstroemeria is always (as officially as common names get) known as Peruvian lily, and Lilium lancifolium is always called Tiger Lily. (I did say I was a pedant, and it’s esp when it comes to plant names!)

  5. Will Knott Said,

I’ll agree that common names with a geographic connotation may seem random. That’s what I meant.

But aren’t there a few official names (with geographic mentions) which had to get changed?

  6. Debbie Said,

Botanical names do change, yes, but for very precise reasons. With developments in DNA analysis taxonomists are learning more and more about how plants are related, and so many families have had to be recategorised and their names subsequently changed. It’s all very precise and logical in fact. Kew.org and mobot.org lead the way in this. Horticulturalists & gardeners don’t usually like it, but a few of us are taxonomists manquee. ;) Common names, while not consistent across the board, aren’t random either. It’s just that one country will have different common names to another, so botanical Latin is best - makes it much easier. Er, is that what you asked? ;-)

(PS I spent a year in the USA verifying plant names, including common names - that’s why I’m a plant name geek and pedant.)

  7. Will Knott Said,

What I should have asked is…
“Is the Peruvian Lily actually from Peru?” (and where can I get some to grow in Ireland)

  8. Debbie Said,

Oh dear oh dear (well it’s late).

Yes it is from Peru - and other areas of South America, and you *should* be able to get it in most garden centres, though now you mention it I haven’t seen it around much recently. I can keep an eye out for it if you like.

  9. McAWilliams Said,

Wow Debbie you really know your stuff about plants, I think if you went through my archives I have probably named others incorrectly, but this has been a real learning curve for me.

Will this plant expands each year if you want me to divide one for you let me know although you should be able to get em in any good garden centre.

  10. geraldine Said,

I love this shot - the colours of the lily (would a lily by any other name, smell?) are really delicate. I almost had a very similar flower in my wedding flowers but the Irish April weather made it a bit too risky :)

  11. Phil Said,

A finishing time now too? Have I missed a lot on twitter due to its downtime??

I shall print a map, and hopefully my bro and I will find it on time. keep an eye on twitter, though, for my updates.

  12. dolly Said,

Great shot of the beautiful lily.

I know you want comments on the site as well to here goes:
    1) I just cracked up laughing. Everytime I’ve come here the little camera man’s been out. Today I saw some others. FANTASTIC! Thank you :)

    2) I know you hate it, but I’m still on IE (v6.0) and the pictures most of the times end up waaaaaaaaay down showing a good set of just empty space under the header. Means I have to scroll down to see the picture. Reloading the page sometimes make the picture go up again. Not sure if it’s just IE, but thought I’d let you know.

  13. McAWilliams Said,

Geraldine, to be honest these flowers are more sturdy then they look, although scent wise not much to report there. In a wedding bouquet they might have looked great although with all the colours I dunno.

Phil, yep starting time was taken from the facebook page, I will be leaving at 4 since I have a BBQ to get too, but sure three hours of tall ships will be ample.

Dolly, cant believe you are only geting to see my various poses now!!! In relation to IE6 I shall have to look into that more then likely I have an extra

tag or something might look into getting validation.
  14. Phil Said,

That issue with IE occurs for me too - though i only use IE in work (1024 X 768 resolution). It happens on my own blog too. I put it down to being a win/IE prob.

  15. r.sherrard Said,

Please be aware the Peruvian Llily will take over your garden it is very invasive/ grows like wildfire.

  16. McAWilliams Said,

To be honest Roy, if it took over my garden I would be a very happy man, since at the moment the garden is in disarray with the builders been there. We have it in pots though so wont go to madly out of control although once the builders leave I may well put it in a flowerbed if it takes over a bit, they are fantastic plants.
